Description
The Asparagus Fern Plumosus has fine, lace-like foliage that looks like a cloud of green feathers. It softens hard corners, adds contrast next to broad-leaf plants and is a favourite with florists for its delicate look.
Despite the name it isn't a true fern, so it's more forgiving. Give it bright, indirect light and regular watering and it grows into a full, cascading mound. It also does well in a hanging basket or on a balcony with morning sun.
Why you'll love it
- Delicate, feathery foliage with a soft cascading habit
- Easy to grow; more forgiving than true ferns
- Works indoors in bright spots and on shaded balconies
- Looks great in bowls, hanging planters and mixed arrangements
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect light. A few hours of gentle morning sun is fine; avoid harsh afternoon sun.
- Water: Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy. Water when the top 1–2 cm feels dry (every 3–5 days in summer, less in winter). Use RO, filtered or rested tap water if you can.
- Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is fine; an occasional misting keeps leaves dust-free.
- Pet safety: Not pet safe: keep out of reach of cats, dogs and small children (mildly toxic if chewed).
- Care level: Easy
